Intercultural Intelligence and the Hofstede work-related values index

Updated: Jul 19

The skill of intercultural intelligence is one that has been of significant benefit in my objective to inculcate the values of the United States of America within my own conduct.

For example, as an Airman of the United States Air Force, I was expected to be versed in the traditions and customs of partner nations such as Taiwan, Rwanda, South Korea, Canada, and Germany.

This strategic vision has impacted the overall conduct that I have subscribed to: a globally inclusive community wherein the strengths of all citizens are able to contribute to the success of the team at their fullest capacity.

This concept was formally introduced within the curriculum at the Hult International Business School in the fall of 2020 as a method of evaluation of each student. Bringing the best performance of each individual on an internationally diverse team was a high priority. For reference, the Hult International Business School campus in Boston, Massachusetts, is the first business school in the United States of America to achieve international accreditation by the International Association of Collegiate Schools of Business, the Association of Master of Business Administration programs, and the European Quality Improvement System. This distinction is held by one percent of business schools worldwide and I was fortunate to have been able to study with classmates from around the world to include Shanghai, Dubai, and London.

The Hofstede work related values index is a framework for cross-cultural communication which was originally developed by Geert Hofstede of the Netherlands. This matrix outlines the effects of a society's culture on the values of its members, and how these values relate to behavior.

For example, the societal expectations in South Korea are very hierarchical and, therefore, each South Korean cadet with whom I would interact at the United States Air Force Academy would defer to the expectations and preferences of higher-ranking cadets, even if they may have had an idea which would benefit the mission overall. As a result I would continually seek to encourage my South Korean colleagues to speak up during meetings as, unlike at their home, innovative views were encouraged at the United States Air Force Academy, their suggestions may lead to greater success.

I studied at the Hult International Business School between September of 2020 and August of 2021 which is one of the first business schools in the United States of America to achieve accreditation by the International Association of Collegiate Schools of Business, the Association of Master of Business Administration programs, and the European Quality Improvement System. This distinction is held by one percent of business schools worldwide and I was fortunate to have been able to study with classmates of every nation at the Boston, Massachusetts, campus. During this experience was provided an opportunity to utilize the Hofstede utility in order to cross reference the factors which may be considered to accommodate traditions of constituent coalition countries. I similarly had an opportunity to work alongside students of partner nations while a cadet at the United States Air Force Academy, and in the future I aim to serve in a role wherein I may provide an impetus for the best manifestation of development for all citizens of the earth.

As a result of this commitment, I must develop a familiarity and an appreciation for the religious standards, political mores, and root behavioral expectations of all member nations of the 'Congress of the United States of Earth.' I am incentivized to bring this vision to fruition due to the positive changes that may be manifested through increased international cooperation and competition.

Examples of this initiative which was discussed among my former classmates have included a universal currency which may improve the efficiency of the intercontinental financial market through combining the resources of all nations to promote the best innovation across all economic sectors.

With the above being stated thank you for considering this post and please have a good day. Sincerely, Winston
